Who better to recommend the best hawker fare than the queen of food shows, Kym Ng? We sampled her favourite dishes – and a couple of desserts too!
MEE SIAM
SUBWAY NICHE, #B1-K3 PARAGON. OPEN DAILY, 10AM-9.30PM
$3.80 KYM SAYS “This is a familiar, no-frills dish that I’ve been enjoying since my school days.” WE TRIED IT The gravy is the highlight of the dish. Tangy and with just the right balance of sweetness and spiciness, it’s tasty as is, so you can slurp it up after you’ve finished the bee hoon. The noodles are cooked till al dente so they don’t become limp and soggy even after half an hour in the gravy – good for takeaways.
WONTON NOODLES
TECK KEE ROAST DELICACIES. 56 ZION ROAD. OPEN DAILY, 7AM-4.30PM.
FROM $3 KYM SAYS “I like wonton noodles without ketchup, which is what they serve. It's authentic and they have the regular wontons and fried ones too.” WE TRIED IT The fried wontons at this stall in the corner coffee shop just across from Great World City are wonderfully crispy. There’s more deep fried wonton skin than fish paste filling but they are very addictive. Order them on their own or with chewy, springy noodles.
LAKSA
STALL 5, SBC FOODCOURT, #B1-28 ORCHARD TOWERS. OPEN DAILY 11.30AM-8PM.
FROM $3.50 TO $5 KYM SAYS “The laksa gravy has a rich flavour yet isn’t jelak (heavy). The tau pok pieces are spongy and the fish balls bouncy!” WE TRIED IT The laska tastes exactly as Kym described it. A bowl comes with two super springy fishballs and five pieces of fried beancurd. The bright orange gravy looks appetising and is not too spicy or rich. We give the stall top marks for consistency too, which kept us going back! It’s great value for money hawker fare in town.
