best of the best

With the mind-boggling range of products and services out there, it’s tough to put your finger on the right, and best, ones. That’s where we come in – by trying, testing and testifying. So we baked, cooked and imbibed, sprayed, sloughed and shampooed, cleaned, dried, and dusted our way through hundreds of items, just so we could tell you which ones are worth the money.

We’re proud to present our 110 winners for 2007.

1 wine opener
Screwpull Activ Ball
From Tangs & Takashimaya D.S.
Ed’s Rave (December 2007) There’s a lot more to this wine opener than form. Made of simple plastic, it worked a treat on wine bottles. Just hold it in place, raise the handle, put a finger into the finger hole, press down on the centre and turn. The cork climbed up and out of the bottle – no pulling required!
  2 digital kitchen scale
Camry EK-5350
From Heap Seng House, BHG, Carrefour, Isetan Scotts & Takashimaya D.S.
Ed’s Rave (November 2007)
It’s more than a weighing machine – it has a thermometer that measures room temperature and a handy timer for when you cook. The blue backlight makes the display easy to read, even at an angle.
  3 kitchen shears
Kai DH 5094
From Takashimaya D.S. & Isetan
Best Value (July 2007)
These shears, from one of Japan’s best knifeware brands, are superb for snipping herbs and cutting through fish and meat with its well-aligned serrated blades. The ergonomic handles are truly comfortable to use.
